“Tennessee cops shoot 59 rounds to kill one man”

“CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Alonzo Heyward carried a rifle around his
low-rent Chattanooga neighborhood one day last month, ranting about
suicide and ignoring the pleas of friends for hours before six city police officers surrounded him on his front porch and decided it had to end.

His father says Heyward told the officers, “I’m not out here to hurt anybody.”

But police, who tried unsuccessfully to disarm Heyward, fired 59 rounds to kill him on July 18. The medical examiner found 43 bullet wounds in his chest, face, arms, hands, legs, buttocks and groin. Police contend Heyward was a danger to others and threatened the six officers.”

This is supposedly a story about White Cops Killing a Black Man just because they are White and He is Black. What it really is, is a story about how most cops can’t shoot worth a crap. There are all kinds of folks that think that just because you have a gun it means that you are armed. They also think that once an Oath is taken and you become a sworn police officer that you can naturally shoot.

What they don’t know is how horrible bad most police forces train their officers in the defensive use of a handgun. Not to disparage the fine men and women of law enforcement, but firing fifty rounds twice a year from 15 yards does not make ANYBODY well trained enough to use a weapon under stress.

Ask any police firearms trainer, and they will tell you that they need more money and most importantly MORE TIME to train their people. Since time really is money, it is the same thing. It is not the fault of the police and it certainly is not the fault of the police firearms trainers. It is the fault of the politicians that think that, “Appearance” is the most important thing. Police Department training budgets are the first thing to get the axe in a financial crisis. It might make the politicians feel good that they have the, “appearance” of armed police, who are well trained in the use of a firearm. But they don’t, and that means you don’t either. The plain fact of the matter is that the police in this country need more trigger time, lots more trigger time.

It did not matter to the Chattanooga cops that he was a Black man. What mattered to them was that he threatened them with a .44 caliber Magnum rifle. They were nice enough to try and talk to him. I would have shot that asshole without a word spoken.

P.S. As to why the cops used so many bullets? If the first ten rounds would have hit him in the heart and destroyed it, he still had about two minutes life left in him to shoot them with his rifle. Just because you are hit fatally with a bullet or bullets does not mean that you will die right then.
