At first glance this video seems to make a good case for the idea that ordinary people should not carry guns. ABC 20/20 Video
But, there a a few things wrong with it.
The students are asked to go up against a highly trained SWAT instructor. The students are under stress. The SWAT guy is not. He has carried a gun concealed for years and years. The student is uncomfortable with the new feeling of having a gun on his hip and has never practiced drawing the weapon from concealment.
The SWAT guy knows WHO to shoot when he enters the room. An active shooter would not. The SWAT guy also knows that there is only one student with a gun. An active shooter would not. He would certainly hesitate if he knew that there was a guy with a gun, and turn and run the other way if he knew that that there were four guys with guns.
The only conclusion I can make is that this is slick attempt to try and convince the American People that they are incompetent when it comes to guns. Let the professionals do it. Unfortunately ordinary cops are not trained to the level of SWAT. They only hit 20% of what they shoot at under stress. The majority of people who have a concealed pistol permit know that the best way to win a gun fight is NOT to be in it. Consequently they are in the habit of being aware of their surroundings. Sit out side a row of stores in a strip mall sometime. Watch the people who come out the front doors. You will see that most people have no idea if there is a threat in their immediate area. They look neither to their flanks and only raise their heads up far enough to see where their feet are going to step next. If you see someone who steps out of the front door and scans the parking lot, looks around while he is walking and updates his threat assessment every five steps, then you are looking at a cop or a citizen who carries a gun. If they see something that makes them nervous. They will step back into the store and dial 911, and stay OUT of a gunfight.
The response time for the average human being is one and a half seconds. None of the students have this time because the SWAT guy already has a plan in place. He is going to enter the room, shoot the instructor, wheel the gun to his left and shoot the student with the gun.
And If this is a true depiction of real guns in the real world, why are firearms used up to two million times a year for self defense? 99% per cent of the time the gun is not fired. Felons when quizzed about their greatest fear when they commit a crime, was not going to jail, the police, but that they might find a victim armed with a gun.
