“Attorney General Eric Holder is using the drug violence in Mexico to “confuse and mislead” Americans in an attempt to reinstate the expired Federal Assault Weapons Ban, gun advocates claim. Holder revealed his intention to reinstate the ban last month while announcing more than 700 arrests in connection with a crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the United States.
“As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to re-institute the ban on the sale of assault weapons,” Holder said. “I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum.”
But Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, told FOXNews.com that Holder’s “argument in general is bizarre.”
“It’s a delusion to say that diminishing the Second Amendment in America is somehow going to stop these ruthless drug cartels in Mexico.”
Might I suggest that the reported 20,000 guns a month that are supposedly crossing the border into Mexico are going to the honest citizens of Mexico who want to protect themselves and their families. If anyone even believes that number? It is almost impossible for an ordinary citizen of Mexico to obtain permission to own a gun and the Government of Mexico has demonstrated it’s failure to protect them. Might I also point out that it is almost impossible to obtain a fully automatic weapon in the United States without jumping through lots of federal hoops. And, you can buy a full auto AK-47 in Columbia for about $50.00. Coincidentally that is where they are smuggling the dope from. Also available in Columbia are Soviet made Rocket Propelled Grenades, Crew served heavy machine guns, and all the handguns that you would ever need. Attorney General Eric Holder is looking in the wrong direction for the gun smugglers.
Gun rights issue a minefield for Democrats in Congress
“Democrats are aware about the reluctance of suburban and rural lawmakers to cast any vote that could be perceived as anti-gun. The Republicans use it like a poison pill when it wants to sabotage legislation—As the Democrats have expanded their base, and with it a House represent districts majority of constituents are gun owners. The voters in those states are hunters and sportsmen and strongly believe in the right to own and bear arms. Republicans see the issue as one of their most effective tools. The 2010 election may see some former anti-gun legislators looking for a way to find a middle ground.” More
